Short Description of Instrument
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th ed. (DSM-5) is newly updated from the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV (DSM-IV) and the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV-Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR).
 
While many issues make the use of these criteria in patients with PD subject to error, they remain the gold standard in depression research.
Comments/Special Instructions
Parkinson's Disease-Specific: The DSM-5 is used as a diagnostic tool. It can be used to assess anxiety and depression in patients with PD longitudinally.
Scoring and Psychometric Properties
N/A-No scoring is necessary for this manual as it is intended to provide informal criteria for diagnosis of mental disorders.
Rationale/Justification
Strengths: The DSM outlines the criteria for psychiatric diagnoses and provides standardized research criteria; diagnostic criteria are symptoms and behaviors which can be assessed by a clinical interview.
 
Weaknesses: The DSM criteria are often different from ICD criteria which may be used by other research groups; The symptoms and behaviors used to confirm diagnoses overlap considerably with the motor symptoms of PD (e.g., motor retardation, sleep problems, and fatigue).
